Gluten Free Lipsticks... What?!?!

It's been a while, ladies and gentlemen! I think it's been about 11 months since my last post. So sorry I fell off the face of the earth. Without further ado, let me tell you why I'm writing this post today.

In December, I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. I have known for a while that I had a sensitivity to gluten, but was never tested until recently. I went off of gluten once completely about a year and a half ago, and then decided I would try to take digestive enzymes to help me with my issues. It worked for a while, but by the fall of this year, I was back in the same place I had began.... stomach pain, bloating, joint pain, and irritabality.
Once diagnosed, I realized I had to come off of gluten completely. I stopped eating gluten-containing foods, but still didn't feel well. After a little research, I realized it could be my lip products.
Now... normally, gluten-containing cosmetics aren't an issue for celiacs. Gluten cannot be absorbed through the skin, although I have heard from some that it can be an irritant. Lip products however can be, and in my case, are ingested. If you lick your lips... you're ingesting that product. It's that simple.
So, one night I decided I had to go through all of my lipsticks and look up the ingredients one-by-one. That was a VERY rough night. Of all the things I love about makeup, lip products are my favorite. I had about 80 lipsticks and glosses... I got rid of about 60. Many of them were my favorite formulas and brands. I had just purchased 5 new Clinique Pop Lipsticks, and every one of contained wheat and barley. My husband, Graham, had just bought me multiple Urban Decay lipsticks for Christmas, all of which were toxic to me. You would be surprised how many contain wheat and barley.
Since then, I have been working hard to replenish my collection, doing research on what ingredients to look out for, what brands claim to be gluten free, and checking on the brands websites for information. Here's what I have currently that I LOVE.
Let's start with high end. Now this is only a bit of what I can have. Obviously, high end lipsticks are more expensive, and so purchasing them takes a bit more time. But let me tell you about what I have.

Pictured from left to right: Bobbi Brown Lip Color, Nars Audacious Lipstick, Buxom Big & Sexy Bold Gel Lipstick, Bite Amuse Bouche Lipstick, Mac Lipstick (All are gluten free EXCEPT the Amplified Creme formula), Bite Butter Lipstick, Bite Luminous Creme Lipstick (no longer available, but thought I would menion them if you have any.), and Fiona Styles Lip Crayons.
Now for drugstore!

From left to right: NYX butter lipstick, all lip products by e.l.f., Maybelline Color Elixer, Jordana Sweet Creme Matte Liquid Lipstick, Revlon Ultra HD Lipstick, Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick (most of these contain an ingredient called tocepeherol or tocopheryl acetate which CAN be derived from wheat, but in the case of Maybelline, I have not found this to be the case, as they do not bother me at all.) Color Pop Lippie Sticks are all GF. And the Ulta Matte Lip Creams are as well.
On to lip care!

I don't own as much in the way of lip care, because, how much do you really need?
From left to right: e.l.f Lip Exfoliator, LUSH Bubblegum Lip Scrub, eos Lip Balm, and LUSH Lip Service Lip Balm.
Keep in mind, not all of these brands are GF throughout. You should always check lables and be mindful that not all ingredients that you see may be safe. Some, like tocepherol and tocopheryl acetate (both another name for vitamin E) may contain gluten, but may also be derived from corn or other things. So it's fine to have lip products containing these ingredients, but you will want to either do your research before hand, or test the product youself like I did, if you're willing to take that chance.
